Independent Study

_IS1.pngThe bridge between Education & Daily Life.

Independent Study (ILC) courses allow students to work at their own pace. Students are able to decide when and where to study, and have added flexibility of starting and finishing a course at any time of the year. ILC credits are available in the new curriculum (OSS).

The length of time to complete a course varies from student to student. A full credit course takes approximately 16 weeks to complete.

Can I take Independent Study courses?

Independent Study courses are available to you if:

  • You are 18 years or older and have been out of school for one year.
  • You are 16 - 18 years of age and have written approval of the Principal of your current school.

Once enrolled in an Independent Study course, you must complete and submit the first Unit of each course within the first month (4 weeks).

If you do not submit lessons for a 12 week period, then you will be moved to "Archived" status. To return to "Active" status, you must re-register and pay a new processing fee of $35.00.

How do I get started?

Before you can begin Independent Study courses, you need to have an assessment. At this counselling session, the assessor will work with you to determine what steps / courses are required to achieve your Secondary School Diploma.

To book an assessment call 905-521-2554.

The Assessment. What you can expect to happen...

  • Gather all records and transcripts of your education whether taken in Ontario or another province or country and take to the Assessment session.
  • Call the Assessment Centre to obtain your transcript if you have been out of school for more than two years or your last high school if you have been out of school for a year.
  • Our Assessment counsellors will map out a Pathway for the courses you need to take to complete your diploma.
  • Pick up your lessons and complete the work at home.
  • Submit your work to be marked and pick up your next set of lessons. Most credit courses consist of 4 or 5 Units of 5 Lessons each.
